Chapter Twenty-Five

I stood in the hall, just outside the kids’ room, listening to them play as I peeked around the corner. They’d stripped their bedding, then used their sheets to make a tent, anchoring both sides with piles of their toys. They were under the tent, playing with their trucks.

Getting down on my hands and knees, I readied myself before crawling as fast as I could under the tent yelling “RARRRRR!!”

Both boys screamed high pitch squeals as they grabbed onto each other.

I laughed, dropping to my stomach to lie under the edge of the sheet.

“Aunt Davina!” Trevor yelled at me.

“What?” I asked, still laughing.

“You scared us,” Tait said, giggling. “You got us good.”

“I certainly did,” I said, reaching out and tickling them both until I worried they’d pee themselves.

I sat up, dragging Trevor onto my lap. “All right, boys. Spill. What happened at daycare? Why did your dad have to pick you guys up?”

Trevor pointed at Tait. “He did it.”

Tait just grinned.

I tried to hide my smile. Tait was always the ringleader. “Tait? What did you do?”

“Miss Nancy was being naughty,” Tait said, turning his attention back to his toy truck. “Even Daddy said I wasn’t in trouble.” Tait thought of something that caused him to look toward the door. He leaned closer, whispering, “I forgot. Daddy said we’re not supposed to tell you.”

“Tell me what?” I whispered back, leaning forward as if we were playing a game.

“That Tait kicked Miss Nancy,” Trevor whispered. “She said something bad about you, so he kicked her.”

Oh, crapper-roo, I thought. I’d forgotten about the article in the Herald. I’d forgotten the town was out there having a meltdown and picking sides. I looked at the boys. “Was it really bad?”

Both Trevor and Tait nodded.

Tait, being the bravest of the two, whispered while watching the door, “Miss Nancy said you stole a girl from her mom and dad and hurt her. But you didn’t, right?”

I reached my arm around Tait, sliding him across the carpet to sit next to me. “No, I did not. In fact, the reason everyone is being so weird is because I’m trying to help the police find the girl.”

“What happened to her, Aunt Davina?” Trevor asked, leaning his head on my shoulder.

“I don’t know, kiddo,” I said, snuggling the side of my face against the top of his head. “But I’m going to try and find out.”

“But why did Miss Nancy say those mean things?” Tait asked.

“Because even nice people say mean things sometimes on accident. But no matter what someone says,” I looked pointedly down at Tait, “you can’t kick people, Tait. That’s not nice.”

I sensed someone in the hallway, likely Olivia, but didn’t turn to look.

“Miss Nancy deserved it,” Tait said, crossing his little arms in front of him.

Olivia’s head suddenly popped under the tent, startling the boys.

I laughed, but nudged Tait to get his attention. “No one deserves to be kicked. Next time someone says something that upsets you, either walk away or tell them they upset you.
